Doc Auto Word Plugin HTML to Word

27342

When inserting variables into Word templates, any field that contains HTML from the rich text editors are not being displayed as expected. Text formatted with bold, underlines, etc. are displayed as normal text.

How to display HTML content within Word?

  • Something we've raised with HighQ and they are aware of, currently no fix/workarond is available

  • David Corrin Getting a permission error trying to load the site - who do I ask for access?

  • Hi Ryan McDonough, HighQ support will be able to add you - this is their client community site.

  • David Corrin / Ryan McDonough, be mindful if you go down this path.

The workaround is a hack at best that is of limited capability, yes it "bolds" some text, but doesn't address bullet points (ordered or otherwise), italicised and/or underline and/or bold text etc.

By opening yourselves to "providing" a (limited) solution, you are creating a rod for yourselves when the subsequent requests (and they will) come for all the other rich text formatting they've entered into the field. Personally, I've responded to the business that the software simply doesn't support that, and that it's with the vendor to provide that in the future.

It's worth reaching out to HighQ as to the latest update for this functionality. Velocity supports this, but (from vague memory) this was added in Velocity 3.0, whereas the Collaborate automation uses 2.0 - and (again vague recollection) there is some breaking functionality moving from v2 to v3.

Just my personal opinion, you understand. Andrew

  • Andrew Quinn - appreciate the above. I am personally stopping at bolding and perhaps at a push underlining (i.e one formatting max). This solution was born out of it being criticial and it was very well received by all parties.

  • Hi David Corrin, glad you stood your ground on the one max limit. Hopefully HighQ have this in the pipeline to make a lot of people very happy.

We are moving away from using HighQ's automation solution for a couple of reasons:

    1. It's expensive for what it does
    2. It's limited in it's programmatic capabilities, i.e. we are not allowed to add our own jar's.
    3. Velocity can be finicky, and difficult to track down errors/bugs/issues

Plus we don't use the Word Plugin for two very good reasons:

    1. Most of the templates are complex, very rarely would we be doing say a simple "letter", i.e. confirmation of instructions
    2. The most important: we have two instances UAT and Production. You cannot use a template created by the plugin in one instance, then be used in the other.  So we can't create and test in UAT, then deploy into Production.

  • Our requirement is that we need to be able to insert formatted text into a word document. It could be HTML, RTF, markdown or whatever solution HighQ can provide, right now we're limited to plain text, which unfortunately does not meet the needs of any kind of complex document. Maybe Imran Aziz can comment?

  • Andrew Lewis thanks for the input, I will bring this to the attention of Kalliopi Tsianou who looks after out DocAuto plugin.
